clouds moving across the sky so fast that the shadows

almost make me dizzy

great picnic food, warm when out of the wind,

dusty, scrubby juniper-pinyon pines in the picnic area

below a tower of windswept white hoodoos dotted

by pinyon pine and shrubby manzanita

slot canyon, deep shade, beautiful patterns created by flash floods

strange, serrated pumice and tuff hoodoos some with mushroom tops created by sandstone rocks ’

canyon walls so friable that a finger run across the surface could leave a mark

hiking to the top of the mesa with a view across forever

light, shadow, light shadow, light shadow, deep canyons, flat mesa

low, blooming cactus with bright yellow flowers

Allen and Andrea waiting at the bottom, at the end of the slot canyon, tales of other hikes

being able to see to Los Alamos in the north and the Jemez and Sangre de Cristo Mountains to the east.
